SEC Finance Division Director, John White has confirmed in a speech what is now common knowledge - that the SEC is seriously considering making XBRL mandatory in the fall, after the introduction of a draft rule in the spring. The fact is, XBRL has already been adopted as the standard by a very large and growing number of exchanges, regulators and countries around the world. The SEC has released its new discussion document dealing with a number of improvements in financial reporting, including - at pages 74 - 87, an exposition on XBRL. The SEC is expected to go with a mandatory requirement to file in XBRL later in the year.
